Farewell Steve

Steve Jobs died last night after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

I’m sure I won’t offend fans of Babbage, Turing, Gates and the rest if I say that no one in history has made a greater contribution than he did to the way computers are today. From the initial idea of the personal computer, to the introduction of the mouse, cursor and windows, to proper digital typography, to the computer as a music appliance, to the mobile phone as a usable computer, to the appstore… to the tablet computer that changed the world, Steve Jobs was the relentless pioneer of the things that turned out to matter. His genius encompassed not just technology but design, style, business and marketing. And to keep us entertained, he was a consummate showman.

And of course in his spare time he helped bring us Pixar, the most successful movie studio of modern times.

It is poignant timing that, just before his death, the firm Steve started from scratch in his garage in 1976 finally became the world’s most valuable company.

If you would like to remember him, there is no better way than this.

The world is a poorer place today.
